The Lord's Been Good to Me

Do you remember the Johnny Appleseed song?

I keep singing that song!  We've dreamed of planting our own fruit trees for many years.

Finally, the first trees of our own little orchard are in the ground!

Everyone helped in some capacity or another, but the bigger children did the bulk of the work.

Emily and Ethan dug the holes and did a grand job of it, too!

The directions said at least "2 feet square", but I didn't picture them to be this large!

Emily dropped into a hole and called to Samuel who was playing in the yard a ways away and hollered out to him, "Samuel, help!!  I'm melting!"

Samuel thought it was all great fun.

We added plenty of "black gold" into each hole along with a good measure of compost and hopefully our little trees will be off to a good start.

We planted 4 apple trees; a Braestar for our eating apple, an Ultramac for eating and baking,  a Red Rome Beauty for pies and eating and a Whitney Crabapple for jelly and for the children to have fun playing with the beautiful, miniature apples.

We also planted 2 tart cherry trees; a Northstar and a Surecrop and 2 cherry bushes.

The cherry bushes will only get 5' in height and that sounds perfect for little ones to pick off of.

Yes, the Lord's been good to me!
