We have had several of our children complaining of random, ongoing pains and discomforts that we couldn't bring under control, even with the help of our doctor. We finally eliminated diary and gluten and all GMO foods for a time. Diary was reintroduced with no ill effects, then grains one by one. We found the main culprit to be corn. At first it was all corn, but now that several weeks of healing time has gone by the kids can tolerate organic non-GMO corn just fine. If they have foods with GMO products in them we have complaints of stomach pain, diarrhea, eczema, bloating and growing children with no appetite.
This is unacceptable to us. Food should be nourishing and bring strength and health to the body, not harm. We have always been inclined to enjoy doing things the hard way, the slow way, the old fashioned way. However you want to say it, we find it satisfying and entertaining. Learning together is one of our joys. Working together and playing together are some of our favorite past-times and doing things the old fashioned way includes both of them at the same time! We've thoroughly enjoyed playing with raw milk and all that you can do with it from making butter to culturing it into all sorts of fascinating creations to one of our favorites...homemade hand-cranked ice cream! Yum! We've long dreamed of raising chickens and gathering our own fresh eggs, having a big garden and canning all of our own food, and having our own family milk cow. Having a source of meat for our family that is safe and good for us is important to us.
Enter... Brisket!
We will care for him to the best of our ability. He will know fresh air and sunshine, frisking in our fields and eating fresh grazing fodder.
We have seeds purchased to grow delicious and nutritious food for him to consume. We will give him affection and a happy life.
Then we will eat him and he will give back to us in the form of safe nutrition.
I'd much rather be saddened at his death when he lived a good life for a good purpose than to go to the grocery store and buy a package of meat and think no more about the cow that it came from or how that cow lived his life or what kind of nutrition that cow consumed.
Now, please don't think I'm saying that it is wrong to eat meat from the grocery store! Not at all! We will still eat meat from the store, but we also want to have the enjoyment and satisfaction of raising our own meat.
