Onions, leeks and peas, oh my!

We received our onions from Dixondale Farms in the mail on March 4th. We took them out of the packaging and placed them in this crate so they would have air circulation while they awaited being tucked into their beds out in the garden.

One thing led to another and they waited and waited until I finally just decided that TODAY WAS THE DAY!

Sometimes I just have to stop trying to find a good time to get something
done and just make it happen.

We finished up the schooling that I consider the top priority and then transitioned to working outdoors.

Jacob and Jordy took everyone outside to work while I stayed inside with the three youngest ones and made lunch.

It was a coooooold day, in the 30s, and everyone who was willing to go out and work was cold but still cheerful.

Kezzy helped me in the kitchen. She washed and chopped a couple of tomatoes for our salad and tore all the lettuce and chopped the finished and peeled eggs while Kelwynne was put in charge of keeping Samuel happy and well supplied with baby toys to keep him occupied so I
could be freed up to boil some eggs, wash and spin lettuce, and chop the other salad veggies.

Soon Noah came in crying from the cold. His fingers hurt and he couldn't get them warm.

He ended up staying in and helping me by peeling the hardboiled eggs and helping Kelwynne care for Samuel.

Everyone else stayed outside and worked until every last leek and onion was planted.

After watering the newly planted onions they were glad to come inside where it was warm and eat the yummy lunch and tell me all about planting.

I was a little bit sad to have missed out on the planting, but mostly I was proud that I could count on them to get it done while we made an opportunity and that they could all work together without me.

Later that day was date night. One of the best days of the week. :)

Jordy fixed Steve and I a nice supper, complete with dessert.  Afterwards we went outside into the cold and planted peas together. True love.  We had some hearty willing volunteers come join us in the frigid fun.  We planted several heirloom varieties we bought from Victory Seeds. Going down the row west to east we planted, Sugar Ann, Wando, Sugar Snap, Little Marvel, Mammoth Melting, and Green Arrow. From there we kept planting on down the row with seeds fromWal-Mart, starting with Green Arrow. By this time we all realized that the cows had been mooing and mooing and that it was growing dark. Steve checked the time and we found out we had kept on going past chore time.

We were forced to call it a night and off we went to do the evening chores...a pleasant end to a pleasant day.

(For my garden journal purposes: planting date was March 20)
