Emily and I took a mother-daughter hike down to our creek. We had a lovely time together being able to talk without any interruptions, allowing our conversation to ramble and roam and go wherever we liked just as we did with our feet. Between the two of us we found over 50 ticks on our persons, but an even better find than that was the discovery of gooseberry bushes! We picked some leaves and a berry and brought them home to identify them using the internet and were so happy to find they were indeed gooseberries. We all planned that we would keep our little secret to ourselves and bake some gooseberry pies to surprise Daddy with.
I have seen a jar of gooseberries on the shelf at the grocery store for a ridiculous amount of money listed on the price tag so we were excited to have our very own bushes to pick from!
Emily took all but the youngest three with her armed with baskets and buckets to bring home their bootie in. I grabbed the camera and took this shot of them all marching off together on their grand adventure into the woods.
Some of them had not ventured into our wooded area yet. It is pretty wild and densely wooded.
Noah was getting a tick off him as they sat and rested a bit.
Look at those beautiful berries!
This is the creek bed that runs at the back of our property. It is all dried up now. The creek that runs across the front of our property is still running, but is slowing down.
It amazes me that our children go everywhere barefooted! I could never hike back in these woods without protective footwear. I'm a wimp.

Here's Naomi's contribution.
They came home with about a gallon of berries. It took them quite some time to get the stems off of them and then Emily turned them into two beautiful gooseberry pies. I wish we had thought to take a picture of them. She did a great job and they looked fantastic.
Daddy was very surprised! The gooseberries cooked up looking very similar to cooked peas. It made it look like we were eating chicken potpie without the chicken! The gooseberries taste curious. Everyone loved it but me. I didn't NOT like it, but it isn't my favorite. They tasted sour and yet, whether it was my mind playing tricks on me or not, I found them to taste a bit on the savory side as well. We plan to go back out and pick more to make gooseberry jam with but I guess gooseberries are one of those things that you either really love or don't!
Do you like gooseberries? What's your favorite gooseberry recipe?
